Lateralis winds prestigious German Design Award
The Lateralis table lamp, by Australian designer Ben McCarthy for Innermost, has been awarded the German Design Award 2016: Special Mention for Excellent Product Design. The German Design Award is one of the best-known design competitions in the world and is held in high regard well beyond professional circles. The competition sets the highest standards when it comes to selecting the prize-winners: thanks to its unique nomination process, products are only invited to participate if they demonstrably set themselves apart from their competitors in design quality.
This year, there were 3,400 entries. 57% of which competed in the area of Excellent Product Design. This much-coveted award will be presented to Lateralis table lamp by the Rat für Formgebung / German Design Council on February 12th, 2016 in Frankfurt. The Lateralis table lamp will be exhibiting at Messe Frankfurt along with other winners of the German Design Awards 2016 throughout the fair (12.02.2016 – 16.02.2016). Innermost will also exhibit the Lateralis table lamp at Maison et Objet Paris in January. In the meantime Canadians can come see this award-winning light at LightForm lighting showrooms.
About Lateralis Table Lamp
The Lateralis table lamp’s artisan-crafted glass seems to pour upwards and outwards, much like the breath of the glass-blowing artist who made it. As a result, the Lateralis’ honey-coloured dome appears to have a syrupy consistency. At its base, the light collects in a pool of dark timber below. At the heart of the Lateralis table lamp, dark ripples of wood reflect off of polished brass. Lateralis is made of glass, dark stained ash wood, and anodized aluminium. Dimensions: 23cm diameter x 25cm height.
Born and raised in Sydney, Ben graduated Industrial Design from UNSW in 2003. A year later, the British Council facilitated his move to the UK where he worked in the Tom Dixon studio. In 2007 he relocated to Hong Kong and he continues to be based there, working in the office of prestigious designer Michael Young. Over the years Ben’s designs have attracted several awards and grants; the Australian Council, British council, and a solo show at the Object Gallery in Sydney. McCarthy has also exhibited in Tokyo, Milan, Hong Kong, London, etc. He also likes to write music, long walks on the beach, and has an impressive array of woodworking skills.
