British heritage meets contemporary comfort
Original BTC’s Cosmo pendants
Inspired by Britain’s rich post-industrial history, Original BTC transforms quality raw materials into modern fixtures evocative of mid-century styles. Its lighting designs, whether crafted out of versatile bone china or the finest aluminum, copper, brass or iron, are known to light up rooms around the world.

While an affinity for tradition is intrinsic to the Oxford-based company’s identity, its lamps are known for their relaxed aesthetic, making them ideal for new hotel, restaurant, retail and aeronautical projects. All products are handmade and manufactured in six production sites in the United Kingdom, including a glassworks facility and a bone china factory in Stoke-on-Trent, a region famed for its centuries-old pottery trade.
Dashing Englishmen: Peter Bowles and his son, Charlie.
Founder Peter Bowles has long had an appreciation for Britain’s manufacturing traditions and was one of the first designers to capture the essence of industrial styling. Since launching Original BTC in 1990, he has continued to support an ethos built on supporting homegrown industries. His expertise in the sector can undoubtedly be attributed to his childhood. Bowles’ grandfather, a carpenter by trade, was chairman of Minty Furniture of Oxford, later bought out by Parker Knoll. Meanwhile, his father launched iconic 1960s lighting retailer Cosmo Designs, appointing him to assist at the Harrogate Lighting Fair at the young age of 13.

After a stint of working at a French cutlery manufacturer, Bowles eventually returned to his lighting roots with the launch of Original BTC. His goal was seemingly simple: to design and produce lights that make one feel at home instantly. His mission has since evolved to include launching new brands to stardom, rescuing British heritage factories from closure and designing the company’s products himself.

In the process, Original BTC has become known for its detail-oriented lamps that improve on conventional concepts. One of its most loved design features is its woven cotton braided lighting flex, which Bowles created as an alternative to the typical plastic version. Herein lies the brand’s knack for understanding the importance of using luxe materials in every aspect. With these ongoing iterations, Original BTC continues to drive British manufacturing and lighting design into a new, innovative era.
