Handcrafted in Canada
Lambert & Fils is a Montreal-based lighting design studio founded in 2010 by Samuel Lambert. The studio’s original and custom lamps for residential and commercial settings take cues from mid-century Modernism, the Industrial Age, and Lambert’s own minimalist aesthetic.
As the child of a potter and a painter, Samuel Lambert was taking apart and reassembling toasters and bicycles before he could read; at an early age, he helped his father with the kiln. Ever since, he has always been fascinated by the magic of seeing inert parts come together into functional wholes. In his forties, Samuel opened a small 500 sq. ft. workshop on Beaubien street in Montreal’s Petite-Patrie neighbourhood, where he initially paid his rent by restoring old Charles and Ray Eames chairs and old lamps, products whose radically simple designs he loved. Soon lighting became his passion: “the lamp satisfies my urge to solve technical problems, while offering me unlimited creative possibilities.”
The company has since become a talent incubator, hiring young designers and artisans who work on both design and production. The studio’s small group of designers collaborate in the creation of a constellation of floor, wall, and suspended lamps using brass, powder-coated aluminum, and marble. Each step of the production cycle, from conception, to prototyping, to fabrication, to packaging, is handled in-house, along with a handful of local sub-contractors, resulting in a high quality product that is made in Canada.
The studio’s pieces have a vintage, industrial, graphic-design aesthetic; without trying to be current, the collections reference everything from modernism to the Memphis movement of the 1980s. This mix of influence gives the company’s products a timeless, universal character. Fascinated by the instant emotional pull of vintage objects, Samuel’s creative process is still guided by instinct and passion rather than rational goals. Indeed his collections, while modern, remain grounded in a certain aesthetic nostalgia.
“Most of all, I’m proud of having recreated the spirit of my father’s studio.”
